Beam Guard Improvements
Client: Wisconsin Department of Transportation
Location: Southwest Region, Wisconsin
Completed under a master design contract with Wisconsin DOT, this project included beam guard upgrades to meet current design standards at 161 sites on five multi-lane highways including I-39, I-90, and US 151. Project elements included survey, plan development and separate PS&E packages for each highway. Design included replacement of bullnose thrie beams and MGS beam guards, and installation of crash attenuators and energy absorbing terminals.
Wetland delineation and beam guard redesign was needed to avoid wetland impacts at multiple locations. Extensive utility accommodation and coordination following Wisconsin Administrative Code Trans 220 was necessary. Design of several unique beam guard installations also required coordination with Wisconsin DOT Central Office and Federal Highway Administration staff. Extensive traffic control planning was necessary to mitigate congestion on these busy interstate corridors.
