Control Room and SCADA Upgrade
Client: Major Water Utility
Location: Midwest
Donohue & Associates led design/build services for a new control system at a Midwest water utility serving over 800,000 residents. Donohue was responsible for design, purchasing, installation and setup, application programming, and testing of the new state-of-the-practice control room and SCADA system.
The new system includes expansion of the existing Ethernet network, development of cross-town Ethernet communication system using city-wide fiber optic system, new HMI and database hardware, and complete application programming for the utility’s two water treatment plants.
Through a series of three workshops, Donohue facilitated discussions with utility staff to develop the proposed solution for the new system and its implementation. The sequenced plan allowed the entire SCADA system to be replaced at both plants without losing the plants’ ability to produce sufficient drinking water to supply all customers.
Donohue’s programming services included conversion of 15,000 tags, creation of 200 graphics and trend screens, modification of several PLC configurations to incorporate control functionality, configuration of the Oracle database, and creation of 300 reports.
Since the successful design/build project completion, Donohue continues to provide control system engineering and programming support.
